Hello Joanna, welcome to Tattoo Life. On your Instagram page, you describe yourself as a “vagabond and tattoo artist.” Would you say you are a citizen of the world? Where are you originally from, and where you currently live and work?
I am originally from Warsaw, Poland. I currently live in Spain, but I am not a resident in any studio, I only work on guest spots. I would definitely say that I am a citizen of the world, there’s so many places that I have a great bond with, but that also doesn’t stop me from being proud to be Polish.
I think it’s important to be able to appreciate all the different countries and cultures but remember where one comes from.
Do you collaborate with different tattoo studios? How did you choose them?
Yes, I am a regular guest in many studios! Most of the time I choose studios based on who works there, I am really curious to see how people whose tattoos I admire work and be able to meet them. But I try to keep a balance – sometimes I guest in huge, famous studios and sometimes in hidden private spaces, the “fame” or instagram following don’t really mean much to me.
Let’s talk about your style. It is very elegant and clean, featuring small-scale subjects created exclusively with black lines. How would you describe it in more detail?
My practice sits at the intersection of fine art and contemporary tattooing. I draw heavily from classical references and reinterpret them through a more graphic, modern lens. My tattoos are a mix of delicacy and boldness, where highly detailed, fine art-inspired elements collide with assertive blackwork and dynamic composition.
The contrast is what keeps it interesting.
There are many references to the world of art in your work. Is art a particular passion of yours? And what about Klimt specifically?
Definitely, I studied fine art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. I’m definitely a bit of an art history nerd, the first place I always go to when I travel is the local art museum. Klimt is one of my favourites, I feel that his paintings combine really well with my style and also his works are so famous and instantly recognizable, that it’s fun to create something new based on them.
You also seem to have a special appreciation for refined and elegant female figures, don’t you?
Well, most of the traditional art pieces feature women. I do definitely enjoy tattooing female figures and I like to prove that a tattoo of a nude female body doesn’t necesarilly need to be vulgar or erotic and can be elegant and feminine.
What kind of clientele do you have?
Most of my customers are women, I am very happy to say that I tattooed many artists, doctors, lawyers, businesswomen – proving that the theory of “you won’t get a job if you have tattoos” is just silly nowadays.
Are you also an illustrator, or have you worked as one in the past?
I’ve never worked as an illustrator per se, but I did do some illustrations back in the day. I would really like to go back to making art on paper more, but with my current lifestyle it does prove to be challenging.
What goals have you set for yourself for the future?
Decide where I want to move and move there. The constant travel is something that’s temporary for me, I would like to settle down someplace eventually, but I am not ready to do that yet. Of course I would still travel, but it would be nice to have a home to come back to.
To conclude, would you like to add something about yourself, your passions, and your personality?
The question we all dread the most. If I wasn’t a tattoo artist I’d be a cowboy and I am way more friendly and fun that my curated instagram would lead you to believe!
