Editors, ‘The Rush’ for new music and concerts is here

While we wait for the new album, due out on October 30th, and the European, UK and Irish tour starting in January 2027, we set out to find out what ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’ will contain .

Editors announced details of their eighth studio album, ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’, scheduled for release on October 30, 2026, via Play It Again Sam.

Along with the announcement, the band also released their new single ‘The Rush’. You can watch the official video below:

‘The Rush’ is accompanied by an official music video shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara, known for works that emphasize bodily expression in cinema, exploring the physicality of movement and presence.

According to Smith, ‘The Rush’ depicts an imaginary scene in a bar, where two people talk about life, drink, and reflect on its ups and downs. «The idea of finding comfort in the people close to me – friends, loved ones, and family – is a theme that comes back over and over again. In a way, it’s a theme that runs through everything I write».

The song features Smith playing the mandolin, an instrument that lends a more organic feel to ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’. Guitarist Justin Lockey, who also recorded and produced the album, explained: «It’s not used in a folksy way, but it adds a warm element that can emerge anywhere in the mix. As a sonic texture, it’s definitely one of the stars of this record. A lot of the rhythms come from the mandolin and acoustic guitar as much as the drums».

Following 2022’s ‘EBM’, a collaboration with electronic producer Benjamin John Power, better known as Blanck Mass, Editors ventured into entirely new territory with ‘Surface, Echo & Sound’.

When the band reunited in the summer of 2025 to work on the follow-up to ‘EBM’, after three albums conceived and recorded primarily as studio projects, they felt the urge to return to a more organic approach, harking back to the band’s early days: sitting in a rehearsal room in Stafford, facing each other, developing songs together.

As with last year’s solo album, ‘There is nothing in the dark that isn’t there in the light’, frontman Tom Smith took a stripped-down, acoustic-guitar-heavy approach to Editors’ new material. He brought a series of songs to the band to play together, experimenting with different approaches and letting the songs find their own natural direction.

Regarding the making of the brand new album, Smith said: «It was a very productive summer. It was sunny most of the time, and we were in the lush green Gloucestershire countryside, not far from where I live, on a small, nondescript industrial estate – pretty much the opposite of Berghain!».
