Interview with the co-founder of ‘Loyo’ tattoo studio in Seoul. Expert in Dotwork and specialized in trippy cats, through his art he wants to express only himself.
Hi Yoon, would you like to tell us something about yourself? How many years have you been tattooing?
I fell in love with tattooing back in 2019, and I’ve been tattooing for six years now. I first learned through a friend and started with handpoke tattoos.

Do you consider yourself a self-taught tattoo artist or have you had mentors in your life?
I didn’t have formal training, but my passion was intense from the very beginning – that definitely pushed me forward! (laughs)

Would you like to describe your tattoo style in your own words?
People often describe my work as “Dotwork style,” but I find it hard to define my artistic expression with a single term. I tend to be quite obsessive by nature, and when I feel out of control, I channel that energy into creating designs. That process itself feels like it fuels my passion even more.

A tattoo artist these days has to stand out from the crowd because of his originality. Do you think you have achieved this status thanks to trippy cats?
That’s a thought-provoking question – one that many artists can relate to (smiles). Personally, I don’t focus on being unique or original just for the sake of it. I try to stay centered on myself and what I genuinely want to express.
Trends come and go, but I prefer to create what I truly enjoy rather than chasing what’s popular.

Tell me about your tattoo studio ‘Loyo’ in Seoul? Is it a private studio or do other people work with you?
‘Loyo Studio’ (IG: @loyostudioseoul) was co-founded with my friend Lofi (IG: @lofi_tattooer). It’s a space that values individual freedom, and I’ve been growing it together with my fellow artists as a collaborative and evolving studio.

Will you be touring Europe at tattoo conventions between fall and winter 2025?
I don’t have any confirmed plans for this year yet, but next year I’m definitely hoping to attend tattoo conventions in Western and Southern Europe.

And your last famous words are… ?
Just do it! Stop overthinking! (laughs)
