Discovering a smart artist who comes from the Far East (Taiwan) but owes his nickname to a trip to Europe that he remembers with deep affection.
Hi Jeffrey, how many years have you been tattooing and why did you choose that nickname ‘Deadcastle’ on Instagram?
I’m Jeffrey from Taiwan (IG: @deadcastle_jeffrey), and I’ve been working as a tattoo artist for nearly 8 years. I chose the name ‘Deadcastle’ during a tattoo trip in Europe with my friends. At the time, I was struggling to come up with a new name, and after visiting many castles, one of my friends came up with ‘Deadcastle’ for me (IG: @deadcastle_jeffrey). That trip was truly amazing!

It seems your Realistic style is very contaminated, right? What are your main influences when you prepare to create your own tattoo?
Yeah, my style is Realistic, but I’ve been exploring more Fantasy and Horror-themed subjects. I aim for my work to have strong contrast and visual impact. At this stage, I’m focusing on bringing more storytelling elements into my tattoos, allowing viewers to feel a deeper narrative through each piece.

Do you think there are other distinctive traits of yours within the tattoo art?
I’m always experimenting with ways to make my tattoo style more unique and innovative. When clients come to me, I hope they truly appreciate and connect with my own style. At the same time, I like to suggest ideas they might not have thought of – while still incorporating their vision.
I believe that mutual trust between artist and client is the key to creating meaningful, successful work for both sides.

Can you tell me something about ‘Analog Tattoo Studio’? Where is it in Taiwan and what is the atmosphere like in such a place?
‘Analog Tattoo Studio’ (IG: @analogtattoostudiotw) was founded by my mentor, Alan (IG: @alan_analog). It’s located in Taipei, Taiwan. ‘Analog’ feels like a big family – every artist there is incredibly talented, and we support and learn from each other. ‘Analog Tattoo Studio’ is a warm and loving environment where everyone grows together!

Do you often travel to tattoo conventions and guest spots? What do you think about trips to Europe?
I don’t see myself as a stationary tattoo artist. I often travel with my team to tattoo in different places, and every year we plan at least one or two trips to Europe. We really enjoy the process of traveling – it helps us reset, find new inspiration, and reconnect with our rhythm.

And your last famous words are… ?
I don’t really have a famous quote, but whenever my clients are about to give up, I always tell them, “You can do it!”. Sometimes, I say it to myself too. (smiles)
