If you think that the images of your tattoos dedicated to these amazing sea creatures come from some exotic ocean, you better read carefully here…

The question is peculiar: what is the true origin of the tropical fishes that live in our aquariums? Maybe some exotic sea? The answer is no. For at least sixty years the major “production center” of these small sea creatures is located in Barcelos, a little town on the banks of the Rio Negro, in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, and not far from Manaus.

The story begins back in 1956 ,when the Cardinal Tetra – one of the most requested fishes by those who want to populate their aquarium – was found in Rio Negro waters. Strange, but true: nowadays the Cardinal Tetra is still supporting the economy of Barcelos and its thirty thousand inhabitants.

This tropical fish is so higlhly respected here that in the main square of Barcelos you will find a statue of Jesus Christ walking on a river where the Tetras are swimming. And every year a nice festival is dedicated to it.

Fact: at least 10 million Cardinal Tetras are exported every year from Barcelos without compromising the environment. These creatures reproduce very quickly for the huge amount of food that the Rio Negro offers and so, fortunately, the extinction is almost avoided.

To cut a long story short, next time you choose to get a tropical fish tattooed on your skin, spend a little thought to this little slice of heaven called Barcelos.
