Time to hook up with Captain, a tattooist who works in Athens at Darkside Tattoo Society. Let’s find out about his Traditional style and his special palette through this interview and his gorgeous eBook…
Would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?
I go by the name Captain, I live in Athens (Greece) and I work at a studio here called Darkside Tattoo Society.
When did you start tattooing and how would you define your style?
I started tattooing almost 8 years ago and I’ve always been drawn to Traditional American tattooing, both for my own work and for the tattooists that I follow.
Has it changed over time?
I haven’t ever really deviated from a Traditional style, but my tattoos have definitely evolved over the years, for instance I’ve narrowed down my colour palette and become more comfortable with big and more creative pieces due to continuous practice and using a classic reference and finding ways to put my own take on it.
Is it important for you to also paint and draw besides tattooing?
Painting and drawing is critical for me, not just for practice and development of my designs but also as an outlet as a way to keep creative in my personal life.
What are your favourite subjects and techniques?
I love tattooing all traditional themes, but I see different themes in style each year, so you end up tattooing some more than others for a while. I have a lot of all time classic favourites like snakes, panthers and dragons, but I’m always happy when I get to tattoo daggers, skulls, girl faces and roses.
Where did the idea of this eBook come from?
The last couple of years I’ve been experimenting with creating zines, collecting up my line drawings, paintings, photos and found objects from the tattooing season. It’s been a cathartic way to track how my work is evolving, and a fun project to get involved with printing methods and layouts. From that, Miki Vialetto gave me an opportunity to turn some of my line drawings from the last couple of seasons into an ebook.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m currently working on a new, physical book with a couple of European tattooists which will be showcasing lots of found and collected items from tattoo history as well as work from tattooists all over the world.
