From May 26th to June 16th 2018, 1900 Galerie in Düsseldorf (Germany) will host the exhibition “Shades of Universe” by the super talented couple Claudia De Sabe & Yutaro Sakai.
I really love the works of Claudia and Yutaro, tattooers at the Seven Doors Tattoo, in London. Both their tattoos and paintings are very inspiring: their work seems to connect the East and the West of this world with a particular flow that few artists achieved. Moreover, 1900 Galerie is a great place and every time I’ve been there it was a lot of fun and positive vibes.
Here are some words by Claudia about the exhibition: “When Fabrice offered us to do an exhibition together last year, we said yes immediately. We thought it would have been a fun challenge/project to do together. Once 2018 arrived, we just started painting, without really thinking of a theme, or a message or idea to explore consciously. But we both started to dig into our national roots and explore a genre of painting that matter to us. Yutaro the nature painting mostly done with sumi and Japanese watercolours, and Claudia the religious, catholic, iconography and symbology using mostly Payne’s grey watercolour.
We kept on painting without asking each other what and why, but we didn’t need that, because we work and draw together everyday and we know what’s the bottom line of it. Painting is an instrument for us to understand what’s going on inside and outside ourselves, it’s a way to filter everyday life and to feel connected to what we know being One and only one truth. It’s a way to get out of the pettiness of society, the gossiping, the piss taking, the ego tripping and remind ourselves that we are nothing in the universe. Whatever we do won’t change how small we are, and that’s so liberating, but will change how we live this moment in time. When we had to pick the name of the show it was a no brainer… Shades of Universe, because that’s what we all are, different shades of the same immense, beautiful, complex, unknown and scary place.”
Needless to say: if you are around Düsseldorf, don’t miss the chance to see this amazing exhibition!
