Mark Mahoney: Down on the West Coast, they got their Icons

Mark Mahoney is a living legend in the tattoo world: he is considered to be the founding father of black and grey art with a single needle.

He started tattooing professionally in 1977 in Boston and moved to the West Coast in 1980. He said he has always been attracted to the idea that tattoos are “art for the people”, for the everyday man or woman. He truly is a great artist, being able to take inspiration from every aspects of life.

He is currently the owner of Shamrock Social Club on Sunset Boulevard: a tattoo parlor that mixes street-shop values with the glamour of its Hollywood location. The slogan of the shop, which tells a lot about it (and him), is “A place where the élite and the underworld meet”.

His look is breathtaking: his unique style involves sculpted hair, a charming smile, penetrating blue eyes, and flawlessly, refined, beautiful vintage outfits.

He has inked some of the top names in Hollywood. Among the long list of celebrity clients: Mickey Rourke, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Marilyn Manson, Tupac, Danny Trejo, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and many, many more.
A lot of artists have also showed appreciation for Mark, one of them being singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey, who wanted him in two of her music videos: “West Coast” and “Shades of Cool” (Ultraviolence, 2014).
