As we all await the release of the new Batman movie, rumours abound about who will play the coveted role of Selina Kyle. It looks like it’s going to be Vanessa Kirby…
So far – in the height of the summer in 2019 – we know only four things for sure about the new Batman film.
That it will be (rather unimaginatively) called “The Batman”, that is due to hit the screens in summer 2021, that it’s going to be directed by Matt Reeves (director of the cult movie “Cloverfield”) and that the role of Batman himself will be played by British actor Robert Pattinson, famed for his role as the sensual vampire Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” saga,
And what about co-star Catwoman? It seems that there is no sure news on that front!
According to the extremely popular website GeeksWorldWide, which got the scoop on Pattinson for the main role, it seems highly likely the part will go to Vanessa Kirby.
The 29 year-old British actor Kirby undoubtedly has the physique du rôle for Catwoman seeing as how she has already starred in a number of action movies including “Mission Impossible – Fallout” (where she played the “White Widow” Alanna Mitsopolisd) and “Fast & Furious – Hobbs & Shaw” where she she was brilliant as the sister of Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham.
The news is not official yet, but there seems to be some substance to rumour because the other names going around online (Aubrey Plaza, Vanessa Hudgens, Morena Baccarin, and even the rapper Nicki Minaj…) seem hardly credible at the moment.
This despite the fact that apart from Minaj, who has no experience whatsoever, they are all top class actors.
Kirby would give us the chance to see a blonde Catwoman, something we haven’t had since the iconic Michelle Pfeiffer in “Batman Returns”, the marvellous Tim Burton movie which came out way back in 1992.
After that, the role went to a super sexy Halle Berry in the spin-off about the feisty feline herself (“Catwoman” in 2004) and then to the sophisticated Anne Hathaway in “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), the third Batman movie directed by Christopher Nolan.
And listen to this: in the film directed by Nolan, Hathaway is never actually called Catwoman, just as a “cat burglar” or by the characters real name, Selina Kyle.
Shooting on “The Batman” should kick off officially between the end of 2019 and early 2020 so that the movie can be released as planned in June of the following year.
