We spent some time with the alt-model that introduces our 2018 calendar. And she spoke to us about her loyalty to Adam France, a talented Ohio tattooist
Let’s continue our interviews cycle with all the twelve gorgeous, tattooed alt-model that embellish the official 2018 Tattoo Life calendar. This time it’s the turn of taking the phone and talking with the ginger-haired Annasthesia Awful. Here we go!
What do you think about your January shooting for the Calendar? In my opinion you are very stylish and sober as well in that picture…
Well, first of all I was so honoured to get the opportunity to shoot with Christian Saint! I have admittedly admired his work for a long time, and it was a dream come true to shoot with him. I think we’re all our own worst critic, but I just love every shot I’ve had the opportunity to take with him.
Let’s talk about your pieces: why did you choose a flying hourglass subject just below your neck?
I designed the concept for my chest tattoo, sans the blue background, several years ago. At the time I designed it, it was simply an idea that I enjoyed. It admittedly didn’t end up the way I had ultimately envisioned, so I’m excited to finally get to re-work it in the near future with a talented artist. Over time, I started making up more and more elaborate stories as to what it was supposed to mean, but in short it’s always just been a testament towards my want to ‘live forever’, hence the broken hour glass.
What’s about that lettering that you wears on your ribs?
That tattoo is from lyrics to an MSI (Mindless Self Indulgence) song, ‘Never Wanted to Dance’ (see video below, ed). I actually have a couple MSI-themed tattoos. Some people consider it to be a somewhat ‘dark’ tattoo, but I’ve always viewed the statement as empowering. It says “There is nothing you can do [to me] that I have not [already] done to myself”. done to myself”.
A sort of confession to yourself…?
Yeah, I’ve endured a lot in my life and have also long struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder, so I can often be my own worst enemy. It’s an affirmation that I feel that if I can flourish and persevere through everything I’ve experienced so far in my life, then why should I fear what comes next? Also, fun fact, MSI’s “Never Wanted to Dance” mixed with Bad Religion’s “Infected” was the first dance at my husband & I’s wedding. (smiles)
I know that you are a great Pokemon fanatic, but at the same time you don’t have any Pokemon related tattoos on your skin…
Only because I want it to be perfect! (laughs) I have gone to get many over the years, but the ideas keep getting bigger and more exuberant, so I want to make sure I can do the ideas justice. I’m starting to realize I’m just going to have to get multiple Pokemon tattoos. One day! These tattoos are definitely on my list.
You described your aquatic sleeve like a “funny and pleasant tattoo, no other meaning behind it”. Is it really so?
Honestly? More or less, yeah. At least that’s how it started. I had had the octopus on my shoulder done several years before by a different artist, before I ended up getting what would be my forearm tattoo. The squid and rabbit battling on my forearm is a nod to the cover art to a particular MSI album, and was designed by Adam France. When he was tattooing me, it was around 4am after Hell City tattoo convention before I caught a flight home, and he started a dialogue with me about the battle scene he was tattooing on me. It ended in us agreeing that I should get tattoo of a carrot sandwich, because obviously they’re battling because the rabbit dropped the carrot sandwich in the water! (laughs) After that, it has just evolved from there.
Tell me something more about Adam France, your definitive tattoos mentor.
He works at ‘Red Tree Tattoo’ in Columbus. We had met on multiple occasions through mutual friends when I would travel to Ohio for photo shoots, and I was excited to have the opportunity to finally get tattooed by him. I was so enamoured with his work that I asked him to do the rest of my sleeve for me. To date, he’s the only artist I’ve flown out of state to work with. Multiple times, at that. Plus he is just fun to be tattooed by, he has amazing vision and great energy! I’m hoping we will finally get to finish things up this year.
Do you have a wish for the brand new year?
I make the same wish every year: to be happy.
