We have the pleasure to have another chat with Alex Pancho after our interview a few years back where the tattoo artist told us all about himself and his tattoos. We find him changed, with far more experience and awareness – both of his own skills and of the tools he has chosen to get the best results.
Hi Alex, it’s a pleasure to chat with you again after that interview we did a few years back. How has life been treating you since then?
Hello. My life has changed a lot since that moment. I have lived and worked in several different cities, travelled around a lot and gained a load of experience. At the moment I’m still working on my life plan.
Where are you at the moment and what are you working on?
I’m currently residing in the Netherlands, investing my time and energy in my new project – my own tattoo studio.
When you spoke to us last you defined your tattoos as: “surrealist”, “minimalist”, “solid”. Are they still like that or has anything changed? Is is just my impression or have you upped the amount of colour you use?
I think that throughout our lives we are always learning and changing, and the same goes for tattoos. I do a slightly different style now, but I still try to put my own touch on every piece I do.
And while we’re on the subject, is there a technical reason why you rely on World Famous?
World Famous is the best ink for me. Tthey have all I need for my type of work: high intensity with the best healed results, easy to work with and of course a huge colour pallette.
Do you want to tell us about your set of Pastel Grey?
It’s a cold Black and Grey set, made for solid type of work. When I use it I apply the same technique as I would in colour tattoos, so no shading, only intense saturation.
How did this collaboration come about and why have you got such total trust in the brand?
As I recall it was around 5 years ago. I was working in Poland at that time. Lou sent me some samples to try, and I have to admit it was the best stuff I’d ever used. From that day on I have been in the Pro-team and part of the World Famous Ink Family.
Now for a more technical question: how do you go about filling in the colour backgrounds and how do you manage to get such a vivid effect?
That’s a tough question, because there is always some form of intuitive skill involved. I’m always trying and trying until I think it looks okay on the design. Of course you should always leave room for changes during your work. So I don’t have to follow a schedule, it’s all about how I think it works best for a specific customer on that day.
How do you ensure the colours stay bright over time?
The most important thing is to find the right contrasts, and a good balance between cold and warm tones. With the right technique and good skin, the results will also be good.
Can you tell us about your experience at the London Tattoo Convention where you came second in the Best of Show?
To be honest, it was not that easy… 3 years in a row I have tried to get the judges to notice my work at the London Tattoo Convention. Each year I have done pieces 3 days in a row, but it’s hard to compete with collaborative pieces done by 2 or more artists. This year I was fortunate enough to grab 2nd place Best of Show. Thanks a lot!!!
What are your favourite subjects? What are the ones you’d never get tired of doing?
I love doing faces, because they show emotions, but no family portraits. I prefer to work with more abstract characters, to show the flow / feeling of the tattoo. There are loads of subjects that I have never tattooed before, so it’s hard to say. I would love to try them all.
Where are you right now and what are your plans for the future?
Now I live and work in Utrecht, the Netherlands. This year I opened my own studio after so many years of being on the road, and working as a guest at other studios. AD PANCHO TATTOO STUDIO is my new place of work.
